Fogo Island Inn

The architectural marvel at the world’s end.

The architectural marvel at the world’s end.

Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the earth. Situated along Iceberg Alley, all 29 rooms feature floor-to-ceiling views of the North Atlantic Ocean. This is where locality is expressed when nature and culture come together through food, adventure, and community. The island has seven seasons, and its still-wild world has caribou to track, hills of berries to forage, nature trails to explore, and countless birds and marine species to behold. This award-winning inn is operated as a social business, and 100 percent of the operating surpluses are reinvested in the community.

What Works:

The improbable combination of the lunar landscape and futuristic architecture works surprisingly well, as though it’s perfectly normal for aliens to land in a remote fishing village in Newfoundland. While the stark contemporary lines of the Inn evoke the massive icebergs passing in front along Iceberg Alley, the warmth of the people who work inside the walls will melt the frostiest of hearts.

What Doesn’t:

The lodge is literally at the ends of the earth, and it take real commitment (which is richly rewarded) to get there. The peak season is really only two months long in the summer and so it can be difficult to book. The price-value relationship is a bit stretched, but all of the profits of the Inn go back into a community foundation.

Insiders tip:

The architecture and landscape are mind-blowing, but the memory that will endure the most from your time at Fogo will be the warmth, charm and stunning authentic personalities of the local hosts. Arrange to spend as much time as possible with the hosts, whether wandering the wind-swept heather listening to tall stories or getting pulled into a community fishing shed for an impromptu spoon party with friends.

Resort Overview

Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth. Situated along Iceberg Alley, all 29 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet. Furnished with handmade quiet luxuries, they serve as a welcome refuge from the numbing uniformity of modern times. The island’s still-wild world has caribou to track, hills of berries to forage, nature trails to explore and countless birds and sea life to behold. This award-winning Inn is operated as a social business, is a community asset and 100% of the operating surpluses are reinvested into the community.

Fogo Island Inn's dining room was named among the top three "Best New Restaurants" in Canada by enRoute magazine. Led by Executive Chef Jonathan Gushue, the Inn's culinary team is responsible for the Inn’s 48-seat dining room, 35-seat lounge and, for on- and off-site catering. The team finds inspiration in the ocean’s bounty, from ingredients grown on the island, and from Fogo Island’s time-honoured outport cooking traditions. Everything coming out of the kitchen is handmade – sausage, bread, baked goods, bacon, and mustards. The menu changes with the wind and the waves and the seven seasons: a culinary mission that respects and celebrates the profound gift of place that is Fogo Island.

Fogo Island is a place where going out on the ocean to catch a fish or watch whales is a part of the natural cadence of life. Fogo Island Inn offers a superb range of land and ocean based experiences and activities for individuals, couples, families and groups. Opportunities range from planned artistic, cultural, marine and natural excursions to expert-guided indoor and outdoor activities and self-guided explorations. Local Island ambassadors are available through our Community Host Program to all guests throughout the Seven Seasons.

Norman Howe

Norman is an Oxford-educated lawyer and itinerant wordsmith who stuck with law long enough to prove that he was tough enough to handle the pressure, but not long enough to be stupid about it (about 3 years, for the record).

He then made the fatal mistake of guiding for Butterfield & Robinson (B&R), the world’s best luxury travel company, during the supposedly brief interregnum prior to taking up a career in academia. Shortly thereafter, he abandoned all pretence of responsibility and embraced the peripatetic pursuit of pleasure on behalf of B&R.

After a decade of nomadic explorations and travel innovation, having exhausted the possibilities for trying out new roles within B&R, he took a seven-year sabbatical during which time he bought, reinvented and sold Horizon & Co, one of Canada’s oldest and most storied travel companies. Along the way, he also managed to marry an awesome wife (Emily) and produce three delightful offspring – Grace, Max & Oscar.

Norman eventually returned to B&R as President & CEO, where he found the company in a downward spiral and was able to turn it around, doubling revenue and travellers and returning it to profitability. Most importantly, he did it without sacrificing the culture of creativity or the commitment to excellence (NPS increased by 20% and B&R won the coveted #1 spot on the T+L list of world’s best travel outfitters).

After a successful 8-year run, the inevitability of a founder-driven, family-business dynamic kicked in and Norman left B&R in 2019. He now spends his time advising and working with entrepreneurs and luxury travel brands to help them grow and innovate.
